People are living longer. Patients no longer associate retirement with tooth loss and the inevitability of dentures. Most people over 60 years of age are on various regimens of medication. Almost all drugs reduce salivary flow and with it the antibodies necessary to fight oral disease. Reduced salivary flow too means less retention for dentures, which will not be worn. This is often accompanied by social withdrawal and progressive depression.

Most people in their sixties can look forward to 20 years of active living. This is a time in life when there is a resurgence in tooth decay and periodontal disease, often in an already heavily restored and compromised dentition. Retirement planning for dentistry is wise. Most social events and parties revolve around a dinner table, barbecue or buffet. Plan not to miss out on these events.

Most of the patients referred to Dr. Wright by general dentists and other specialists are re-treatment cases. Patients whom have undergone a comprehensive course of restorative dental treatment in their twenties following trauma, disease or neglect will require re-treatment in their forties and again in their sixties. Twenty years is about as long as the best dentistry will last. The success of re-treatment is largely dependent upon how well the first course of treatment was performed. Patient care and neglect affect the performance of the treatment. Regular maintenance is extremely important. Good dentistry takes time.
